The StowAway Carrier gets a paws up from the dogs! Dog lovers are some of the our most enthusiastic StowAway owners. The StowAway Swingaway models provide space for gear so that the dogs have more room inside the vehicle. And the swingaway frame pivots open so that the dogs can come and go through the back liftgate.

Mike is the latest owner to send an image of his Ford Explorer, StowAway Carrier and his dogs. He and his Bernese Mountain Puppies are enjoying a trip to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan.

It seems like every week we are contacted by someone that trains dogs, participates in dog agility shows, oversees K9 dogs or simply owns a dog, and tells us how perfect the StowAway Carrier is for them. Lot's of room for gear and swings out when the dogs are ready to take a walk.

How do I carry both the StowAway Carrier and Bikes?

Once in a while RV customers ask us how they might carry bikes and the StowAway Carrier? While we sometimes suggest a roof mounted bike rack this isn't really an option on some RV's.

One of our recent customers solved the problem with a front mounted hitch receiver. They simply plugged their bike rack into the front hitch receiver and the StowAway Carrier into the rear receiver hitch. Their StowAway Max Swingaway provided enough clearance for their spare tire when closed and clear access to the rear door of the RV when swung open. The two hitch combination may be ideal for your travel needs.

As a tune up for the upcoming softball season MB took his StowAway Max on a ski trip to Taos, NM. According to MB it performed flawlessly.

StowAway Max now has Reflectors

We have added wrap around reflectors to our StowAway Max Carrier. The reflectors increase the visibility of the StowAway from both a side and back view perspective, increasing the safety factor for your carrier. The standard reflector is red but we will be adding other colors in the near future so that you can customize your StowAway with your school colors. We also plan to modify the decal area so that you can add your school logo to the box.

StowAway Carrier Lid Rack

Customers sometimes ask us what they can transport on the StowAway Lid Rack. Our response is that the Lid Rack is best for items that are light in weight but too large to fit into the box or inside your vehicle.

A customer of ours in California found just the right application for the lid rack. He needs some extra height to get to his kayaks on top of his camper and a ladder is required. But where should the ladder go when he's ready to hit the road again - the StowAway Lid Rack has proven to be just the thing. Hood to Coast Relay 2009

We sponsored a group of runners in the 2009 Hood to Coast Relay again this year - the infamous Helen's Angels. The Hood to Coast is an annual team running relay and attracts team members from all over the USA.

Helen's team needed some extra room in their van and opted for a StowAway Max Carrier , both for its overall capacity and its swingaway frame. Needless to say they opted to personalize it with their own accessory pack.

As we've said many times, we always love hearing from StowAway2 owners, with pictures of their rig. This afternoon, we got a nice note from Tom J. (Montana) who wrote to say,

Hey guys & gals... Having the need for more storage in my 31' Arctic Fox travel trailer, I opted to mount a Stowaway2 on the rear of the RV. I purchased the storage pod from Camping World. I... plugged the Stowaway2 into the receiver. It's just like on a truck or SUV, but on the rear of an RV, and is as solid as a rock. Connecting the Stowaway2 wiring to the RV wiring harness was a cinch. Thought you might like to see some pictures. I'm looking forward to my next trip and the extra storage space provided by the Stowaway2.

Toyota 4 Runner Cargo Carrier

We always love to hear road trips stories.

Yesterday, new StowAway2 Owner Lawrence H. (Oregon) stopped by to gear up for his upcoming summer trip. Lawrence plans to put 1000s of miles on his Toyota 4-Runner this summer and decided that a StowAway2 Super Max Swingaway was the best way to add some storage space for his long haul across country.

Pickup Truck Box

Check it out: the StowAway2 Sport Box doubles as a handy truck box that can be used in just about any pickup truck out there. Here's a few shots of the Sport box loaded into the bed of a pickup.

Like all of our boxes, the Sport Box is fully lockable and can be drilled with holes should you want to mount it permanently to the inside of your truck bed. It can also be drilled for use with any of our steel cargo carrier frames for your trailer hitch.

Custom Hitch Cargo Rack

This morning we got a nice email from new StowAway2 Owner Alan S. (Illinois) who wrote, "Thanks for the good service and fast delivery." He also took the time to take some pictures of his new Swingaway Cargo Rack-- with some custom additions.

The Swingaway Cargo Rack will clear just about every liftgate with no contact. However, "barn doors" -- double doors that open from the middle and have hinges on the outside-- can sometimes provide limited clearance or even contact the rack, as is pictured below.

Alan's solution was simple and cheap: "I just put 3/4 hot water pipe insulation on the basket to keep the door from getting scratched."

Toyota Highlander

Alice, a Portlander and dog show enthusiast, stopped by today to pick up a Super Max Swingaway for use on her Toyota Highlander.

Toyota Highlander owners are one of the StowAway2's largest owner groups. It's easy to see why! Check out the following snaps.

The carrier rides tight on the back of the vehicle to reduce any issues with backing up or fitting into a spot when parking.

When swung open, the Super Max carrier provides total access for the rear liftgate to open unimpeded.

As you can see, the StowAway2 doesn't block the Toyota Highlander's rear tail lights, although it does come with its own set of tail lights for extra safety and security (our LED lights are pictured).

Airstream Conversion Van

Spring Break has come and gone here in Oregon, but many people are just gearing up for their annual trip. Such was the case for Glenn M. and family (Woodinville, WA) who swung by our headquarters today en route to Disney Land. Glenn is the proud owner of this mammoth Airstream conversion van, which tops out at more than 11 feet tall (think one and a half Shaquille O'Neals). Despite the vehicle's size, Glenn said he's always looking for more storage capacity.

As you can see, Glenn ordered our Max Swingaway with the Max Lid Rack, adding 16 cubic feet of storage space to the back of his vehicle.

When installed, the Swingaway Carrier pivots out 180 degrees, allowing full access to the Airstream's rear double doors.

It's been a busier winter than normal around here-- probably because the weather hasn't been as horrendous as last year-- and we've had a number of brave Canadians make the trek down to our factory here just outside of Portland, Oregon.

It's that time again: Letters From the Road.

StowAway2 Owner Kirit P. (Texas) sent in the following note about his Super Max Swingaway.

I just want to share my experience with my new StowAway2 Max Swingaway. The items were shipped very fast, well packed, and reasonable shipping. I received the product 3 days after ordering it over the phone. It is a very well made product. The best I have seen. I attached it to my 2004 Infiniti QX56 using the hitch tightner (a must). I also used the license plate holder. I got the LED brake lights (another MUST). They are very bright and noticible. I also got the lid rack (another MUST). We packed it to the brim. I placed my skis on the lid rack and secured them with bunge cords. We drove from Midland, Texas to Durango, Colorado (600 miles). The stowaway did not move a bit. No noises or rattles. It worked out great. The Stowaway2 made our trip very manageble. I would recommend this product to anyone. Thank you for making a GREAT product.

Custom Swingaway Rod Rack

We've been selling the StowAway2 Swingaway fishing rod rack for a number of years. Since we debuted the rod rack, we've heard and seen a number of custom rod racks that StowAway2 owners have put together.

However, this one might just take the cake.

StowAway2 owner Steve A. (Pennsylvania) emailed in the following pictures, which show the custom Rod Rack he has set up on his rig.

Steve started by purchasing a Swingaway Frame a la carte. To this frame, he mounted a custom-sized rack for his large fishing cooler, a tail light kit for improved visibility on the road, six custom rod holders and a side-mounted fold-up cutting board.

Pictures are worth 1,000 words so we'll let the pictures do the talking.

Back view:

Great shot of his rod holders, which appear to be cut at variable lengths for a cool visual effect.

Sideview:

Here you can see the fold-up cutting board in the down position. Also, you can see that this rack system rides very close to the back of his vehicle.

Swung Out View:

As you can see, our Swingaway frame pivots back and away from the vehicle without any deflection. Here, the rack has been opened up to the 90 degree position.

This picture shows the cutting board in the up position, perfect for preparing bait.

Here you can see the truck bed access that is granted by our Swingaway frame.

"Gentlemen: I have just completed my first round trip with my new Stowaway Max Swingaway and it proved to be everything I hoped. My wife and I used it to transport some of our belongings from our home in Illinois to our home in Texas. It was a 2500 mile journey.

Since we take our Golden Retriever with us, the Swingaway feature worked out perfectly allowing us to get the dog out of the car easily to stretch his legs and take care of business whenever we stopped for gas. As we returned to Illinois we were caught up in an ice/snow/sleet/rainstorm that wreaked havoc on the roads and traffic.

The Stowaway proved watertight and our luggage came through dry as a bone. It looks great on the Mountaineer and we will probably use it on the Navigator for our next trip to Texas!"

The sideview shows you what to expect clearance wise. The box is set far enough back so it can be opened when it's not swung out. Also, it's far enough back so that the Envoy's rear glass can be opened without swinging the box out. To access the rear cargo area by opening the liftgate, simply swing the cargo box out to 90 degrees and you're good to go!

Thinking Inside the Cargo Box

Yes, thinking inside the box runs counter to the cliche, but even big-thinking, adventuresome StowAway2 owners do it sometimes. Why, you might ask? Well, when it comes to bringing along extra gear, you want to be sure everything will fit. Hopefully, the following pictures will give you an interesting, top-down perspective on their capacity.

First up is the Max Box (our most popular), which can be purchased a la carte by clicking here. The Max cargo carrier box has a capacity of 16 cubic feet, with dimensions of 51" L x 23" W x 26" H.

One of the great things about StowAway2 Swingaway Cargo Carriers is that they can clear just about any rear-mounted spare tire. Here, the spare tire is mounted to a swinging frame of its own, just below the rear door. As you can see, there's more than two inches of clearance behind the spare tire, plenty of room to swing open the cargo carrier and acces the rear of the van.

2007 GMC Yukon with StowAway2 Cargo Carrier

Recently, we installed a Max Swingaway cargo carrier on a brand-new (so new it still has the dealer sticker on the back and no license plate yet!) 2007 GMC Yukon. Here it is pictured:

As you can see, this Max Swingaway also features the StowAway2 Wheel Kit as well as an accessory that we haven't mentioned yet on the StowAway2 Blog, the Travel Counter.

The Travel Counter hooks onto the base of your Max Box, providing a horizontal surface for preparing food during a tailgate or camping trip. If you have either our Standard Box or our Sport Box, the Travel Counter will come with a Lid Stay, which helps prop open your box's lid. The Max hitch cargo box box does not need a lid stay, as it has a grooved notch which secures the lid open in the vertical position.

Owners Gallery -- Pleasureway Motorhome

Just the other day, into our mailbox came these great shots from StowAway2 Owner Mike C.

As you can see below, Mike has installed a Max Swingaway cargo carrier onto his Pleasureway motorhome.

To access the rear storage area of the Pleasureway, simply swing the carrier on its pivoting frame.

Swinging the carrier open allows full clearance on the left-hand rear door and roughly 70 degrees clearance on the right hand door.

As the weather turns gloomy here in the Pacific Northwest -- it is October, after all-- we got to looking through the photo archives from the past summer. What a summer it was! Here's some great shots from August that we forgot to pass along, sent in by StowAway2 Owner Jeff P.

First up is Jeff's new Max Swingaway attached to the back of his Chevy Truck (with Northstar Camper shell).

Initially, Jeff was concerned that the Swingaway Cargo Carrier might not allow access to his rear camper door. As you can see from the following shots, however, our Swingaway Cargo Carriers allow full access to the rear of his camper shell.

Like many StowAway2 Owners, Jeff said he was ordering his cargo carrier to bring along on for extra storage space on camping trips. Here's a few shots that he sent in of his setup as he trekked through the California wilderness.

As you can see, Jeff has added a custom telescoping pole to support the underside of his StowAway2 carrier.

Owners Gallery -- Bike Cargo Rack

It's been awhile since we've written about the StowAway2 Bike Cargo Rack (here's one post and here's another from back in the day).

Today's post will catch you up: here's a few shots taken this summer, when some intrepid travellers and hardcore mountain bikers stopped by our corporate office. Here's a shot of their sweet Dodge Pleasureway conversion van with the Bike Cargo Rack attached.

Here's another shot with the rack fully loaded with 4 mountain bikes.

If you've got a keen eye, you'll notice the bike rack post in the picture is actually quite a bit taller than our normal bike rack post. If you've got large mountain bikes, we can custom-size our post to fit your bikes, as we did for this gentleman. The longer post also means more vertical room underneath the bikes for storing your gear in the cargo rack basket.

Fold Down Bike Racks

Recently, however, Fold Down Hitch Bike Racks (also called tilt down bike racks) have become perhaps the most popular style bike rack style on the market. While Swingaway racks provide the maximum amount of clearance, Fold Down Racks can provide enough clearance in most situations.

Roadtrek Cargo Carrier

Problem: Roadtrek Conversion vans have a very large rear-mounted spare tire-- the Continental Kit-- which is notorious for causing problems to hitch-mounted products, such as bike racks and cargo carriers.

Solution: With the help of a 7" Hitch Extender, the StowAway2 Max Swingaway Cargo Carrier can sit far enough behind the Roadtrek's Continental Kit to provide proper clearance. Check out the picture below.

If you look closely, you can see 2 Hitch-Coupling Tighteners securing the carrier to the vehicle. The first Hitch-Coupling Tightener is used to secure the hitch extender to the vehicle's hitch. The second Hitch-Coupling Tightener is used to secure the Swingaway carrier to the hitch extender.

While we don't recommend using one of our enclosed StowAway2 Cargo Boxes on the Subaru Outback (unless it has an upgraded towing package with a tongue weight capacity greater than 230 pounds), our Swingaway Cargo Rack works great.

Our Swingaway Cargo Rack uses the same frame as our StowAway2 Swingaway Cargo Carriers, so it pivots a full 180 degrees for total liftgate clearance.

It features a very large basket making it easy to transport big, bulky items that might not fit inside a box. Keep in mind, you can add a Bike Rack to the Swingaway Cargo Rack and transport up to 4 bikes as well.

The Swingaway Cargo Rack is available to fit either a 2" trailer hitch or a 1.25" hitch.

Vehicle Fit Series -- Eurovan

Vehicle fit questions have been coming our way fast and furious... so without delay, here's the latest: the ever-popular and oh-so-distinct VW Eurovan. The Eurovan is a personal favorite of ours here at StowAway2; Who wouldn't want to cruise America's open roads in one of these babies?

Will a StowAway2 work on your Eurovan? ABSOLUTELY! The tricky ingredient here is the VERY large rear door... it is both wide and deep and creates headaches for many hitch-mounted products.

To accommodate this rear door, we actually drill our box ever-so-slightly off-center. It's not noticeable when the cargo carrier is riding on the back of your vehicle, but when you swing the carrier open, the extra inch or two of clearance created by the off-center drilling allows the box to swing all the way outside the door. What does this mean? Total trunk access. Fantastic!

Vehicle Fit Series -- Jeep Liberty

Welcome to Round 2 of our Vehicle Fit Series. This time we are tackling the rough-and-tumble Jeep Liberty.

We get questions from Jeep owners all the time: "Can I fit a StowAway2 Cargo Carrier on the back of my Jeep Liberty?"

The Liberty is tricky for two related reasons: 1) It has a rear-mounted spare tire and 2) The tire is mounted very low on the vehicle, almost low enough to cover the hitch.

Good news: there are a few easy ways to ensure that a StowAway2 Cargo Carrier will work with your Jeep Liberty.

The easiest solution? Simply REMOVE your Spare Tire. If you do this, you will be able to select from the entire StowAway2 product catalogue. Even better, if you take off your Spare Tire, all of our Swingaway carriers will allow you to fully access the rear of your vehicle!

Do you NEED your spare tire and the extra store of a StowAway2? We suggest RE-MOUNTING your spare tire higher up on the back of your vehicle (roughly 6 to 9 inches above its factory location). This way your new StowAway2 Cargo Carrier will have plenty of breathing room!

Vehicle Fit Series -- Hummer H3

It's a fact of life: vehicles are as unique as their owners, coming in every color, shape and size. Here at StowAway2, we have taken every effort to ensure that there is a StowAway2 Cargo Carrier for every driver AND every vehicle.

Some vehicles, however, are trickier to fit than others: spare tires, rear ladders, different hitch sizes, you name it. This post will initiate a series of posts that will examine known vehicle fit issues with the StowAway2. We'll focus on some of America's most popular vehicles and explain EXACTLY how our Carriers will work with these vehicles.

What better vehicle to start with than... the HUMMER H3!

As you can see, we've got a huge rear-mounted spare tire and an overly-large door to deal with. The good news is that StowAway2 Cargo Carriers will work on the Hummer H3, with some limitations.

Our Swingaway carriers will sit behind the H3’s spare tire with no problem. H3 owners: to access the contents of your carrier, you will simply swing the box away slightly, open your lid, and then swing the carrier closed. One nice feature is that Swingaway carriers will enable the box to ride as close to your vehicle as possible: the carrier will sit only 2 or 3 inches behind the H3's spare tire.

Please be advised: Because of the H3’s large rear door, our Swingaway carriers will not allow access to the rear of your vehicle.

It's customer survey time here again at StowAway2; every year we ask StowAway2 owners to send us their thoughts about every aspect of their cargo carriers. We always enjoy reading their thoughtful responses and, occasionally, funny vignettes. This year we got this doozy from StowAway2 owner Jonathan D.

When I was stopped by the Highway Patrol for "speeding", the conversation quickly went to "what is this thing on the back of your car?" I showed the officer the features, especially the Swingaway feature. He was impressed. Gave him a brochure and then he let me off with just a warning. We always love to pass on stories from one StowAway2 owner to the whole bunch-- well, this past week we received quite the letter from LG of California.

She writes: "Your StowAway2 saved us several thousand dollars during our latest trip. Regretably, our RV's brakes failed! All of a sudden, our RV crashed into a tree and stopped. We were extremely fortunate no one was hurt. When we got out to check the damage, we noticed that our brand-new StowAway2 was smashed. But, AMAZINGLY, there was not a scratch on our RV!

Another Storage Solution

Good news, the newly-redesigned StowAway2.com is just days away. In the meantime, we've received a truly impressive submission from a StowAway2 owner.

It's a question we've addressed before: what do you do with your StowAway2 when its not in use? We've developed a Wheel Kit and a Cover to help with storage solutions, but StowAway2 owner Mark Gacke took it a step farther: he developed a stand mount. Mark went all out on this, sending in pictures of his stand and the dimensional drawings he used to design the stand.

As you can see from the drawings, his stand is designed to support the full weight of the StowAway2 Cargo Carrier box and frame. He's even crafted a 2" x 2" opening to slide his frame into. We're blown away! Thanks Mark!

"All in all, it's a pretty cool device. well suited for the purpose. I prefer this to a rooftop carrier, not just because there's no climbing, but because the squarish shape is more useful and easier to pack. Rooftop carriers create lots of aero drag and have a bad reputation for getting crushed in low clearance situations and flying open (or worse, completely off) on the freeway. This thing is rock solid."

Chevy recently rolled out the 2007 Tahoe and thanks to the good folks at Wilsonville Chevrolet, we got a chance to test drive one. We could go on all day about what a great vehicle this is, but a picture is worth 1,000 words. So... here's a picture:
